AWS Data Exports is a service for exporting cloud cost and usage records into machine-readable formats that can be queried, joined, and analyzed downstream. Instead of relying on console views or fragile custom parsing, teams can ingest billing data into analytics systems, warehouses, or security tools and keep it aligned with tags, accounts, services, and usage dimensions.
In cyber security, this matters because cloud spend can expose abuse that other logs miss. Sudden cost spikes may indicate a compromised automation account, runaway workloads, scraping, cryptomining, or unauthorized AI usage. Defenders use Data Exports for FinOps, chargeback, and incident triage, mapping spend back to principals, projects, and approved services. The same data can also support policy checks and anomaly alerts, but it is not a preventive control by itself. Its value comes from making cloud activity measurable, searchable, and easier to govern.
