Autostart Location

A Windows path or setting that can cause a program to run automatically during login or startup.

An autostart location is any Windows path or registry setting that causes a program to launch automatically when a user logs in or the system starts. Common examples include Startup folders, Run and RunOnce registry keys, scheduled tasks, and some service configurations. These locations are important because they turn a simple file drop or registry change into code execution without an explicit user click.

Attackers often target autostart locations for persistence: if they can write a malicious executable, script, or shortcut into one of these paths, their code may run on the next reboot or logon. That makes an arbitrary file write much more dangerous, especially when the write lands in a startup-relevant directory. Defenders look for unexpected entries, unusual file names, and changes to permissions on these paths. Restricting write access, monitoring modifications, and reviewing startup items are standard ways to reduce this risk.
