An autonomous security agent is an AI-driven system that independently searches for vulnerabilities in software, services, or infrastructure. It can scan targets, test inputs, chain observations, and produce findings with little or no human prompting. In practice, these agents are used for reconnaissance, fuzzing, code review, and controlled penetration testing.
This matters because speed and scale can uncover bugs faster than manual work, but autonomy also creates risk. An agent may return a convincing report without proving a real exploit path, so defenders need telemetry, reproducible tests, and ground truth to separate true vulnerabilities from false positives. In attacks, similar automation can help adversaries discover weak points quickly; in defense, it helps teams prioritize patching and validate protections under realistic conditions.
