Autonomous defenses are security tools or workflows that use AI to analyze activity, make decisions, or take actions with limited human intervention. They may, for example, prioritize alerts, isolate an endpoint, or block suspicious traffic. Their speed can help defenders respond to threats at scale, but automated decisions can also affect sensitive systems and data.
In real attacks, adversaries may try to manipulate an AI-assisted defense so it misses malicious activity or takes an unsafe action. Prompt injection or hostile content processed by an AI workflow could distort its analysis, while excessive permissions can magnify the consequences. Defenses include limiting each tool’s access, requiring approval for high-impact actions, logging tool use, and validating important decisions through independent checks or human review.
