Automatic reconnection

A device feature that joins known networks without fresh user approval.

Automatic reconnection is a device feature that reconnects to a previously known Wi-Fi network without asking the user again. Phones, laptops, and tablets use it to save time and reduce friction, especially when moving between home, office, and public hotspots.

In cyber security, this convenience can become a risk. If a device reconnects based only on a familiar network name or saved profile, it may join a rogue access point or a fake hotspot that imitates a trusted network. Attackers can use that behavior to intercept traffic, trigger unsafe sign-in pages, or steer users toward the wrong network. Defenders reduce the risk by disabling auto-join on public Wi-Fi, forgetting unused networks, and checking prompts before reconnecting. Automatic reconnection is safe only when the device can verify that the network is truly the one the user intended to trust.
