Authorization chain

The formal sequence of approvals required before a sensitive security action can proceed.

An authorization chain is the formal sequence of approvals required before a sensitive security action can proceed. In cyber security, it defines who must review, approve, and sometimes re-approve an operation such as deploying malware analysis tools, accessing privileged data, blocking traffic, or launching an offensive or intrusive action. Each step creates accountability and limits who can act on behalf of an organization or state.

Authorization chains matter because cyber operations often cross technical, legal, and operational boundaries. A weak or missing chain can lead to unauthorized access, unsafe changes, evidence contamination, or actions that exceed policy or law. Defenders use chained approvals, logging, and role separation to prevent misuse of admin rights and to ensure that high-risk actions are traceable. Attackers often try to break these chains by stealing credentials, impersonating approvers, or rushing operators into bypassing controls.
