The Author role is a built-in WordPress role meant for users who create and publish content. In the default model, authors can write posts, upload media, and manage their own content, but they should not have full administrative control. The exact capabilities are configurable, so sites can expand or restrict what an Author can do.
This matters in security because role-based access is not the same as low risk. If an Author account is compromised, or if a site grants the role extra capabilities, that account may reach upload or content-processing features that touch sensitive server-side components. Attackers often abuse this level of access to place hostile files, trigger unsafe parsers, or pivot from ordinary publishing rights into code execution paths. Defenders should review role assignments, remove unnecessary capabilities, and treat upload and conversion workflows as high-risk boundaries even when they are reachable by non-admin users.
