Authentication policy

A rule set that defines how users prove identity before getting access.

An authentication policy is a rule set that controls how a user must prove identity before receiving access to a device, app, or network. It can require passwords, PINs, biometrics, multi-factor checks, trusted devices, or step-up verification based on risk. In managed environments, policies are often enforced centrally so administrators can keep login behavior consistent across many endpoints.

Authentication policy matters because weak or inconsistent rules create easy paths for account takeover and unauthorized use. Attackers often exploit poor policies by guessing simple PINs, stealing credentials, or abusing sessions that never re-check identity. Defenders use policies to limit those risks with stronger factors, lockout thresholds, device binding, and rules for recovery or shared devices. On platforms like ChromeOS, authentication policy can decide whether a local PIN is allowed and how tightly it is tied to the managed device.
