Authentication controls

Checks that verify whether a request or user is legitimate.

Authentication controls are the checks a system uses to confirm that a user, device, or request is legitimate. They may include passwords, session tokens, multi-factor prompts, device certificates, signed requests, or server-side challenge/response logic. In practice, authentication answers a basic question: “Who are you, and are you allowed to prove it right now?”

In cyber security, these controls are critical because they sit at the front door of sensitive functions. If they are weak, missing, or only enforced by a client app, attackers may replay requests, reuse leaked tokens, bypass login flows, or call backend APIs directly. Strong defenses keep authentication on the server side, verify every privileged request, and avoid trusting secrets embedded in mobile or desktop code. Good authentication controls also work with authorization, rate limiting, and logging so that suspicious access attempts can be detected and blocked before they reach protected data or physical systems.
