Authenticated session

A logged-in browser or app session that carries the user’s existing access and privileges.

An authenticated session is a browser or app session that has already verified the user’s identity, usually by login, token, or cookie. While the session stays valid, the application treats requests as coming from that user and preserves their access rights, such as reading mail, editing files, or approving transactions.

This matters in cyber security because attackers often target the session instead of the password. If they steal a session cookie, hijack a web token, or trick software into acting inside an existing login, they can operate with the user’s current privileges without reauthenticating. In AI-assisted browsing or automation, the risk is that an assistant may perform actions inside a trusted session, making unintended posts, purchases, deletions, or data exposure look like legitimate user activity. Defenses include short session lifetimes, strong logout handling, MFA for sensitive actions, device binding, and explicit confirmation before irreversible changes.
