Attacker emulation

Defensive training that recreates adversary behavior in a safe environment to improve detection and response.

Attacker emulation is defensive training that deliberately recreates the behavior, tools, and tactics of a real adversary in a controlled environment. Unlike general awareness training, it focuses on what attackers actually do: initial access, privilege escalation, lateral movement, persistence, and exfiltration or disruption. In industrial settings, the environment is usually a lab or isolated replica of operational systems, so teams can practice without risking production.

This matters because good defenders need to understand attack paths, not just vulnerabilities. Emulation helps security teams test detections, validate alerting, measure response time, and find gaps in segmentation, logging, and incident playbooks. It commonly appears in purple-team exercises, breach-and-attack simulations, and OT labs where operators practice against realistic scenarios. The goal is not to imitate crime for its own sake, but to make defenses sharper by showing how an intruder would move and where they would be stopped.
