Attack-path validation

Testing whether separate weaknesses can be chained into a real compromise route.

Attack-path validation is the practice of testing whether separate weaknesses can be chained into a real compromise route. Instead of asking only, “Is this system vulnerable?”, defenders ask, “Can an attacker use this issue, then pivot through another control, and ultimately reach something valuable?” The result is a practical measure of exploitability, not just exposure.

This matters because real intrusions rarely depend on one flaw alone. An attacker may combine weak passwords, excessive privileges, an exposed service, and poor network segmentation to move from an initial foothold to sensitive data or admin access. Attack-path validation is used in security testing, breach-and-attack simulation, and remediation prioritization to prove which findings actually create risk. It helps teams focus on chained abuse paths, verify that fixes break the route, and avoid treating every alert as equally urgent.
