Atmosphere

A layer of gases surrounding a planet.

An atmosphere is the layer of gases surrounding a planet. It can be thin or dense, and its composition affects temperature, chemistry, surface pressure, and whether water or other compounds can persist. In astronomy, detecting an atmosphere is a major clue when judging a world’s conditions, because gases can leave measurable fingerprints in light passing through or reflected from the planet.

Atmosphere is not a cyber-security term in the strict sense, but the idea matters in technical analysis: every system has a surrounding environment that shapes what can be observed. In security work, that “environment” may be noisy traffic, background alerts, or normal user behavior. Defenders look for weak signals inside that noise, while attackers try to hide activity in it. The lesson is the same as in planetary science: conclusions are only reliable when the surrounding conditions are measured carefully and the signal is strong enough to separate from background interference.
