Asset context

Information about what a device is, where it sits, and why it matters operationally.

Asset context is the operational information that tells defenders what a device is, where it is deployed, what it connects to, and how important it is to the business or process it supports. In security tools, this can include device type, owner, firmware version, network segment, function, and whether the asset is part of a critical production line or a low-risk test system.

It matters because the same vulnerability can have very different impact depending on the asset behind it. In OT and IoT environments, knowing that a weakness belongs to a backup sensor is not the same as finding it on a live controller driving physical equipment. Attackers often exploit poor asset visibility to hide inside forgotten or misclassified systems. Defenders use asset context to prioritize patches, reduce false positives, and avoid disruptive scanning or changes on sensitive devices. Without it, vulnerability discovery creates noise; with it, findings become actionable risk.
