Assessment validity is the degree to which an exam, test, or exercise actually measures the skill or knowledge it is supposed to measure. A valid assessment gives defenders confidence that the result reflects real competence, not luck, memorization, or tool-assisted output. In cyber security, this matters when organizations test analysts, developers, or users: if a test only rewards polished answers, it may miss weak reasoning, poor judgment, or unsafe habits.
Generative AI has made assessment validity harder to preserve because a person can produce convincing text, code, or explanations with external help. That weakens output-only tests and can hide whether someone truly understands secure coding, incident response, or phishing detection. Defenders respond by using process-based assessments such as oral defenses, staged tasks, hands-on labs, and explanation of decisions. These methods make it harder for automation or copied answers to stand in for genuine skill, improving the reliability of security training, hiring, and certification.
