Article 6

The AI Act provision used to determine whether a system follows the high-risk classification route.

Article 6 of the EU AI Act is the legal test that determines whether an AI system enters the high-risk classification route. It does not describe a single technology; instead, it connects the system’s intended purpose and the relevant annexes to a set of stricter regulatory duties. If a system meets that route, it can trigger requirements such as risk management, technical documentation, logging, human oversight, and post-deployment monitoring.

In cyber security, Article 6 matters because classification is a control decision. A weak or unsupported classification can cause an organization to miss required safeguards, while a correct one helps security and compliance teams build inventories, approvals, and evidence trails. Attackers do not usually target Article 6 directly, but they can benefit when vendors understate risk and leave gaps in oversight or documentation. Defenders use Article 6 during system review, procurement, and audit to prove why a use case is or is not high risk.
