Archive system

A repository that stores older records not used in daily operations.

An archive system is a repository for older records that are kept for legal, operational, or historical reasons but are not used in everyday work. It may store court files, personnel records, or long-term case data after those records leave active systems.

Archive systems matter in cyber security because they often hold large amounts of sensitive data while receiving less attention than live applications. If attackers gain access, they can search, copy, or exfiltrate years of records in one intrusion. Defenders reduce that risk with strict access control, logging, encryption, and monitoring for bulk queries or large exports. Good archive governance also means knowing where old data lives, who can reach it, and whether it can still be protected as systems and staff change over time.
