Application rationalization

The process of reviewing software to decide whether it should be kept, modernized, replaced, or retired.

Application rationalization is the process of reviewing an organization’s software portfolio and deciding whether each application should be kept, modernized, replaced, consolidated, or retired. It is not just an IT cost exercise: it helps teams remove duplicate tools, eliminate unsupported systems, and reduce operational complexity. In security programs, rationalization is a way to shrink the attack surface by cutting unused services, stale integrations, and applications that no longer have a clear owner.

It matters because old or overlapping software often lags in patching, identity controls, and logging. Attackers frequently look for forgotten web apps, abandoned SaaS subscriptions, or duplicated business tools with weak access policies. A rationalization review can uncover these exposures before they are abused. Defenders use the same process to standardize platforms, improve visibility, and focus hardening efforts on the few applications that truly matter to the business.
