Application-layer storage is any place a website, plugin, or custom code keeps data outside the platform’s built-in credential system. That can include custom database fields, admin logs, exports, cached files, or backup data. It matters because the safety of the data depends on the application’s own design, not on the core CMS’s normal password handling.
In cyber security, this becomes a problem when secrets such as passwords, API keys, or session tokens are saved in readable form or with weak protection. Attackers often look for these locations after a breach because they may expose usable credentials immediately, without cracking hashes. Defenders should inventory where sensitive data is stored, avoid plaintext secrets, restrict access, and ensure logs and exports never capture passwords unless strictly necessary. In practice, application-layer storage is a common weak point in custom plugins and integrations.
