AppContext switch

A .NET setting that can turn a runtime behavior or workaround on or off.

An AppContext switch is a .NET configuration flag that changes how the runtime behaves for a specific application. Developers, administrators, or framework updates can use it to enable a fix, preserve legacy behavior, or turn a workaround on and off without changing the application code.

In cyber security, these switches matter because they can affect both reliability and protection. A switch may be used defensively to keep an app working after a compatibility regression, but it can also reduce security if it disables a mitigation or restores older, weaker behavior. In real environments, attackers may look for applications that rely on legacy switches, while defenders use them to control rollout, test patches safely, and limit the blast radius of framework changes. They are a small setting with outsized impact on how .NET apps behave under pressure.
