App-plus-API paths are the full attack surface created by a mobile app and the backend APIs it calls. In practice, a flaw may not be in the app alone or the server alone, but in the way they work together: weak authentication, poor session handling, insecure transport, exposed endpoints, or broken object-level authorization. Security teams study this path because a hardened app can still be compromised if the API trusts bad input, and a strong API can still be abused if the client leaks tokens or reveals hidden functions.
These paths matter in both attacks and defenses. Attackers often reverse engineer the app, intercept requests, and then send crafted API calls directly, bypassing the user interface. Defenders test the app and API as one system, using threat modeling, runtime inspection, and API validation to find gaps that single-layer testing misses. Thinking in app-plus-API paths helps teams focus on real user journeys and the data exposed behind them.
