API-SSL is MikroTik's encrypted management API service, used on TCP 8729. It provides the same administrative functions as the plain API, but wraps the connection in TLS so credentials and commands are not sent in cleartext.
In cyber security, API-SSL matters because it reduces exposure to sniffing and simple credential theft on untrusted networks. It is not a full defense by itself: if the service is reachable from the internet, attackers can still try repeated logins, abuse weak passwords, or probe exposed management interfaces. Defenders should combine API-SSL with firewall allowlists, VPN access, strong unique credentials, and strict limits on who can reach the management plane.
