API account

A programmatic identity used by software to access platform functions under defined permissions.

An API account is a programmatic identity that software uses to call platform functions under defined permissions. Unlike a human user account, it is usually created for an application, service, or integration and is authenticated with a key, token, certificate, or other secret. The account’s access should be limited to only the actions it needs, such as reading orders, updating inventory, or sending events.

API accounts matter because they often sit inside the trust chain between a business and its vendors. If an attacker steals an API key or abuses a compromised integration, they can act as that software component without needing a staff login. In real attacks, this can expose customer data, modify storefront behavior, or trigger fraudulent workflows. Defenders reduce risk by using scoped permissions, rotating secrets, monitoring API activity, and revoking unused accounts quickly.
