Anti-abuse

Controls designed to detect and reduce misuse of a platform feature.

Anti-abuse controls are safeguards that detect and reduce misuse of a platform feature. They are not aimed at stopping a system compromise; instead, they limit behavior that tries to overload, manipulate, or degrade a service through legitimate interfaces such as notifications, sign-up forms, messaging, or permissions prompts.

In cyber security, anti-abuse matters because repeated low-level misuse can erode user trust and make malicious activity harder to spot. A notification channel flooded with spam loses its value as a trust signal, while repeated prompt abuse can train users to ignore warnings. Defenders use rate limits, reputation checks, filtering, anomaly detection, and automated suppression to keep important features credible. In real attacks and abuse campaigns, these controls help block bulk messaging, fake account creation, credential stuffing support flows, and notification spam before users are overwhelmed.
