Annual percentage rate (APR) is the yearly return, or yield, expressed as a percentage. In savings and deposit products, it lets people compare offers on a common basis, even when the term length or payout schedule differs. A 3% APR means the product is expected to return about 3% over a year under the stated conditions.
APR matters in cyber security because financial scams often rely on rate claims to build trust and pressure victims. Phishing pages, fake banking dashboards, and fraudulent investment offers may advertise unrealistic APRs to lure deposits or steal credentials. Defenders look for mismatches between the advertised APR, the product’s terms, and the real institution behind the offer. Fraud monitoring and anti-phishing systems can flag suspicious domains, copycat branding, and misleading rate language, helping teams stop scams before users transfer money or enter account details.
