Amplitude

the size of a vibration or oscillation.

Amplitude is the size of a vibration or oscillation, measured as the distance from a signal’s baseline to its peak. In physics, it describes how strong a motion is; in cyber security, the same idea applies to any repeating signal, from audio and radio waves to power draw, sensor readings, and traffic bursts.

Amplitude matters because many security tools rely on thresholds. A larger amplitude can make a signal easier to detect, amplify a side channel, or push a sensor outside its normal range. Attackers may try to increase or suppress amplitude to trigger alarms, create noise, or hide activity in background variation. Defenders monitor amplitude changes to spot tampering, abnormal device behavior, and covert communication.
