Alert prioritisation

A ranking method that helps analysts focus on the most urgent events first.

Alert prioritisation is the process of ranking security alerts so analysts can focus on the most urgent events first. In a busy security operations center, dozens or hundreds of detections may arrive at once, but they are not equally important. Prioritisation uses factors such as severity, asset value, user role, threat intelligence, and attack stage to decide what needs immediate attention.

This matters because speed is critical in cyber security: a real intrusion can spread, exfiltrate data, or disable systems while lower-risk alerts still sit in a queue. In practice, prioritisation appears in SIEM and XDR platforms, where alerts linked to known malware, suspicious privilege escalation, or active lateral movement are pushed higher than routine policy violations. Good tuning reduces noise and helps defenders act on the events most likely to represent active compromise.
