AI maturity is the staged progression from simple AI assistance to tightly governed automation. Early stages usually help with search, drafting, or summarizing. Later stages can recommend actions, fill workflows, and eventually trigger decisions or execute routine tasks with less human supervision. The concept matters because each step up the ladder increases not just capability, but also the system’s operational risk.
In cyber security, AI maturity is a controls problem. A model that only drafts text creates limited exposure, but an agent that can read tickets, route requests, publish content, or run tools can be manipulated by prompt injection, bad data, or overly broad permissions. Strong defenses include scoped access, clear ownership, review gates, audit trails, and continuous measurement of errors and misuse. Mature AI is not just more autonomous; it is more disciplined.
