AI-enabled cyberattack

An attack that uses artificial intelligence to increase speed, scale, realism, or automation.

An AI-enabled cyberattack is a malicious operation that uses artificial intelligence to make attacks faster, larger, or more convincing. AI can help generate phishing emails, mimic a person’s writing style, automate reconnaissance, or quickly adapt malware and scams as defenders respond. This matters because the barrier to scaling cybercrime drops when routine steps can be automated and refined at machine speed.

In practice, AI may be used to improve social engineering, select likely targets, or accelerate parts of an intrusion chain such as scanning, credential theft, and lure creation. Defenders face the same pressure: AI can also support detection, triage, and response, but it must be managed carefully. Organizations should treat AI as part of the attack surface, with controls for access, logging, testing, and recovery. In critical infrastructure, that is especially important because a cyber weakness can quickly become an operational disruption.
