Agentic sprawl

The proliferation of autonomous AI agents and their related tool and API connections.

Agentic sprawl is the rapid growth of autonomous AI agents and the tools, APIs, identities, and permissions they connect to. Unlike a single chatbot, an agentic system may call multiple services, hand off tasks to other agents, and move data across several workflows. As more agents appear, it becomes harder to know what is running, who approved it, and where sensitive data is going.

In cyber security, agentic sprawl matters because every new connection adds attack surface and governance burden. Untracked agents can create shadow AI, bypass least-privilege controls, and expose regulated data through logs, prompts, third-party plugins, or stored outputs. Attackers may abuse weakly scoped tokens, malicious APIs, or prompt injection to steer agents into unsafe actions. Defenders reduce risk by maintaining an inventory of agents and integrations, restricting permissions, logging actions for auditability, and continuously reviewing data flows and access paths.
