Advisory

A vendor security notice that identifies vulnerabilities, affected products, and patch guidance.

An advisory is a vendor-issued security notice that explains a product weakness, the versions or features affected, and the recommended fix or workaround. In practice, it is the main document administrators use to judge urgency, understand exposure, and plan patching. A good advisory usually names the vulnerabilities, describes the impact, and gives clear mitigation guidance.

In cyber security, advisories matter because they translate technical findings into operational action. Defenders use them to prioritize updates, check whether systems are affected, and look for signs of exploitation. Attackers also watch advisories closely: once a flaw becomes public, they can target unpatched systems with more precision. In enterprise platforms, an advisory may cover issues such as SQL injection, authorization failures, or privilege escalation, helping security teams map the risk to specific controls and logs.
