An advanced electronic signature is a stronger form of electronic signature that is uniquely linked to one signer, tied to a specific document, and able to detect later changes. In practice, it depends on controlled signing keys and reliable identity verification, so the signature can be checked against the person and the exact content that was approved.
In cybersecurity, this matters because it protects both authenticity and integrity. Defenders use it in regulated workflows such as digital onboarding, approvals, and contracts, where proving who signed and whether the file was altered is essential. Attackers often try to bypass it by stealing credentials, taking over accounts, tampering with signing workflows, or replacing documents before signing. A valid advanced electronic signature does not stop all fraud, but it makes forgery and post-signature modification much easier to detect.
