Administrator protection

A Windows security feature that keeps users deprivileged and limits elevation to approved just-in-time actions.

Administrator protection is a Windows security feature that keeps users running with standard privileges and allows elevation only for approved, just-in-time tasks. It is designed to reduce the amount of time a process, session, or account spends with administrative rights, which limits what malware, stolen credentials, or a careless user can do. In practice, Windows must create and enforce the correct security token before a remote or local task can proceed.

This matters because many attacks depend on over-privileged accounts or weakly controlled elevation paths. By narrowing when admin rights are available, the feature helps block persistence, lateral movement, and unauthorized system changes. Defenders also use it to support least-privilege workflows in Remote Desktop, help desk, and endpoint administration. The tradeoff is that policy or update mismatches can break legitimate access if Windows cannot correctly authorize a non-admin session or elevation request.
