Administrative API

A programmatic interface used to manage sensitive system settings and operations.

An administrative API is a programmatic interface for managing sensitive system settings, user permissions, routing rules, and other operational controls. Unlike a public data API, it belongs to the management plane: the part of a system that changes how the service behaves. These endpoints often handle high-impact actions such as updating configuration, rotating credentials, enabling features, or viewing secrets and logs.

In cyber security, administrative APIs matter because they are high-value targets. If authorization is missing or weak, an authenticated low-privileged user may be able to change settings they should never touch, leading to privilege escalation, data exposure, or service disruption. Defenders should treat these endpoints as critical assets: enforce server-side access checks, restrict network exposure, require strong authentication, and log every change. In practice, many real attacks against cloud, SaaS, and AI platforms focus on admin APIs because one flawed management request can rewrite the system’s security rules.
