ADC (Application Delivery Controller)

A device that manages and optimizes application traffic, often at the network edge.

An Application Delivery Controller (ADC) is a network appliance or virtual service that sits in front of applications and manages traffic before it reaches the backend servers. ADCs commonly handle load balancing, TLS termination, health checks, routing, compression, and access controls. They are often deployed at the network edge, where they become a critical part of the path between users and services.

In cyber security, ADCs matter because they are high-value control points. If an attacker gains access to the management plane or exploits a flaw such as command injection, they may be able to change traffic rules, disrupt services, intercept requests, or pivot deeper into the network. Defenders should treat ADC administrative interfaces as sensitive assets: restrict exposure, use strong authentication, patch firmware quickly, review logs for configuration changes, and segment the management network from user-facing traffic.
