Adaptive testing

An evaluation method that changes question difficulty based on performance to preserve measurement strength.

Adaptive testing is an evaluation method that changes the next question, challenge, or sample based on prior performance. If a subject answers correctly, the test gets harder; if it struggles, the test adjusts downward. The goal is to measure capability more precisely with fewer items and less wasted effort than a fixed, one-size-fits-all exam.

In cyber security, adaptive testing matters because static benchmarks can be gamed, memorized, or outgrown. Security teams use adaptive methods in penetration testing, phishing simulations, user training, and AI red-teaming to keep difficulty aligned with the target’s current skill level. This makes it harder for an attacker or model to overfit to a predictable pattern and helps defenders distinguish real capability from test-specific tricks. Adaptive testing is especially useful when evaluating fast-improving systems, because it preserves measurement strength even as performance changes.
