Active Remote Session

A live connection where an operator can interact with a remote machine.

An active remote session is a live connection between an operator and a remote machine, usually through remote support or administration software. During the session, the operator can view the screen, move the mouse, type commands, transfer files, or launch approved tools. Because the connection is already established and trusted by the endpoint, it often has far more capability than a normal network login.

In cyber security, active remote sessions matter because they concentrate powerful actions in one place. If session controls are weak, an attacker who gains access may be able to use legitimate support features for file delivery, command execution, or lateral movement. Defenders should treat these sessions as privileged activity: require strong authentication, limit which roles can start or control them, log every action, and alert on unusual file transfers or tool launches. The goal is to ensure a live support channel stays a managed administrative workflow, not an attack path.
