Accounts Receivable

Money customers owe for products or services already delivered.

Accounts receivable (AR) is the money customers owe for goods or services that have already been delivered. In business systems, AR usually lives in accounting, billing, and ERP platforms, where invoices, payment terms, and aging reports are tracked until payment arrives.

AR matters in cyber security because it is a high-value target for fraud and business email compromise. Attackers may try to change bank details on invoices, redirect payments, create fake customers, inflate balances, or tamper with aging data to hide losses. Defenders protect AR by limiting who can edit billing records, separating invoice creation from payment approval, verifying change requests out of band, and monitoring for unusual payment patterns. Strong controls around AR reduce the chance that a single account compromise becomes a direct financial loss.
