Access records are logs that show who connected to a system, when they connected, from where, and sometimes what they did. They may come from servers, applications, VPNs, cloud platforms, or authentication systems. In practice, these records help security teams reconstruct activity and separate normal use from suspicious behavior.
In cyber security, access records are valuable for incident response, access reviews, and scope validation. After a ransomware or extortion event, defenders use them to check whether an attacker authenticated with stolen credentials, moved between systems, or reached sensitive data. They also support containment by revealing unusual logins, repeated failures, impossible travel, or privileged access at odd hours. Good logging does not stop an intrusion by itself, but it often provides the evidence needed to confirm what happened and how far it spread.
