Access management

Controls that decide who can enter systems and use sensitive functions.

Access management is the set of controls that decide who can sign in to a system, what they can do after entering, and which sensitive functions stay restricted. It covers identity verification, authorization, roles, privilege levels, and often tools such as multi-factor authentication, single sign-on, and privileged access controls.

It matters because stolen passwords, overprivileged accounts, and weak approval rules are common paths into an environment. In real attacks, adversaries often abuse valid accounts rather than breaking encryption, then move laterally or exfiltrate data using permissions that were granted too broadly. Strong access management helps defenders limit blast radius with least privilege, periodic access reviews, separation of duties, and fast revocation when accounts are no longer needed. It is one of the most practical ways to reduce risk.
