Access is Cloudflare’s identity-aware access control product. It sits in front of an application and checks who is requesting it, from where, and under what policy before the request is allowed through. Instead of relying on network location or a VPN alone, Access uses authentication, identity provider integration, device or context checks, and per-app rules to make access decisions at the boundary.
This matters in cyber security because many attacks begin with stolen credentials, weak remote access, or overbroad internal trust. By enforcing least privilege at the application edge, Access can reduce exposure to exposed admin panels, SaaS tools, and internal web apps. In real defenses, it is used to require single sign-on, step-up authentication, or approval for sensitive apps, and to block unknown users, risky devices, or unexpected geographies. In an incident, strong access controls help contain lateral movement and limit what an attacker can reach after compromising an account.
