AARRR

A lifecycle framework covering Acquisition, Activation, Retention, Referral, and Revenue.

AARRR is a lifecycle framework that breaks user activity into Acquisition, Activation, Retention, Referral, and Revenue. In cybersecurity, it is useful because it helps teams map where legitimate users enter a product, where trust is established, and where abuse or fraud can appear. Security, growth, and fraud teams often use the same stages to align telemetry, product analytics, and risk controls.

Attackers can exploit each stage: malicious signups target acquisition, account takeovers or bot actions can fake activation, credential stuffing and automation pressure retention, invite abuse and affiliate fraud affect referral, and payment fraud or subscription abuse hit revenue. Defenders use AARRR to decide what to instrument, such as device fingerprinting, anomaly detection, rate limiting, and step-up authentication, so lifecycle data reveals suspicious behavior instead of only business metrics.
