5G Standalone

A 5G architecture with a standalone 5G core, enabling advanced service control and differentiation.

5G Standalone is a 5G deployment that uses a dedicated 5G core instead of relying on an older 4G core. That gives operators finer control over authentication, mobility, policy, and quality of service, and it enables network slicing for separate logical services on the same physical infrastructure. In cybersecurity, this matters because security controls can be applied more precisely to different users, devices, and workloads, including upstream-heavy AI devices that need predictable performance.

It also changes the threat model. A cloud-native 5G core depends on software services, APIs, and orchestration, so misconfigurations or vulnerabilities in those components can expose signaling, weaken isolation between slices, or let attackers disrupt service. Defenders use strong identity controls, segmentation, monitoring, and hardened management planes to limit blast radius and detect abuse. In practice, 5G Standalone is both an enabler of stronger service policy and a new target for infrastructure-focused attacks.
