389 Directory Server

An LDAP directory server used as the identity store behind FreeIPA.

389 Directory Server is an LDAP directory server, meaning it stores and serves identity data such as users, groups, roles, and policy attributes. In FreeIPA, it acts as the backend identity store, so it is more than a simple database: its access rules help decide which identity objects can be created, modified, or trusted. Because of that role, mistakes in directory authorization can have domain-wide impact.

In real attacks, weaknesses in 389 Directory Server can be chained with flaws in higher-level identity software to let an attacker influence privileged group membership or identity records without proper authentication. Defenders should treat it as a core trust component, not just an application service. Securing it means tightly controlling LDAP permissions, limiting anonymous exposure, reviewing self-service and bind behavior, and patching both the directory server and any systems that depend on it, such as FreeIPA.
