A 2FA extension is a browser add-on that helps users handle two-factor authentication, such as generating one-time codes, approving logins, or managing MFA-related browser flows. It is meant to strengthen account security by requiring something beyond a password.
In cyber security, these extensions matter because they sit close to sensitive login activity. On an infected endpoint, an infostealer may target extension data, session artifacts, or browser state to help an attacker reuse an authenticated session or bypass parts of a login flow. The extension itself is not the weakness; the risk is that malware can abuse whatever secrets or browser context it can reach. Defenders should treat 2FA tools as sensitive software, protect endpoints from malware, and rotate or revoke sessions if a workstation is compromised.
