Triple extortion is an advanced ransomware tactic where cybercriminals employ three layers of pressure to coerce victims into paying a ransom. Initially, attackers encrypt the victim's data, making it inaccessible. Secondly, they threaten to leak or sell sensitive information if the ransom is not paid. The third layer involves additional threats or actions, such as launching distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks or directly contacting customers, partners, or employees to escalate the pressure. This multifaceted approach increases the likelihood of payment by targeting not just the affected organization but also its wider network, amplifying the consequences of non-compliance.
