Technology Readiness Level (TRL) is a standardized metric used to assess the maturity of a particular technology. Originating from NASA, the TRL scale ranges from 1 (basic principles observed) to 9 (actual system proven in operational environment). This framework helps organizations, including those in cybersecurity, evaluate how close a technology is to full deployment. By determining the TRL, stakeholders can make informed decisions about investment, development, and risk management. TRLs are widely used in research, development, and innovation projects to ensure that technologies are sufficiently mature before they are integrated into critical systems or released to the market.
