Shiite (Shia) Islam is the second-largest branch of Islam, representing about 10-15% of all Muslims worldwide. Shia Muslims believe that leadership of the Muslim community should have stayed within the Prophet Muhammad’s family, specifically passing to his cousin and son-in-law, Ali, and his descendants. This belief has led to distinct religious doctrines, rituals, and leadership structures, including the concept of Imams as spiritual and political leaders. Major Shia populations are found in Iran, Iraq, Bahrain, and parts of Lebanon, among other regions. Shiite Islam differs from Sunni Islam in its interpretation of Islamic law, religious practices, and historical narratives, contributing to significant cultural and political diversity within the Muslim world.
