A shadow identity refers to a digital user account, often created for automated systems, applications, or AI agents, that operates outside standard oversight or monitoring. Unlike regular user accounts assigned to humans, shadow identities may lack proper controls, tracking, or visibility, making them vulnerable targets for cyber attackers. These unmanaged identities can access sensitive resources without the usual security checks, increasing the risk of unauthorized access, data breaches, or misuse within an organization's IT environment.
