Ploutus is a sophisticated malware family designed to target and compromise Automated Teller Machines (ATMs). First discovered in Mexico in 2013, Ploutus enables attackers to control ATM cash dispensers, allowing unauthorized cash withdrawals by sending specific commands, often via external devices or SMS. The malware is notable for its modular architecture, multilingual support, and ability to erase traces after attacks, making detection and forensic analysis difficult. Ploutus variants have evolved to target different ATM vendors and operating systems, posing a significant threat to financial institutions worldwide. Effective mitigation requires robust endpoint protection, network segmentation, and regular ATM software updates.
